Favourite Author/s and Why

Post  Anybugger on Sun May 10, 2009 10:01 pm

Following on from Favourite book (i'm still trying to decide mine)

Who is your favourite Author? who is it that you HAVE to buy when they come out?

On my list are In some semblence of order

James Patterson
Jeffrey Archer
Lee Child
John Grisham (I always hope he will return to the writing of old)

I *think* I have all of the books that the above have written with the exception of recent hardbacks as my obsession was getting too expensive so I have to wait for paperback!!

Hx

Terry Pratchett

Raymond E Feist

DragonLance saga authors (different ones for the different books)

Also used to include David Eddings but I don't like his new books at all unfortunately.

Oh! And why... Um. I like the fantasty writers because I love escapism. I like Torey Hayden from a professional point of view, Jodi Picoult is absorbing and Mil Millington is just hilarious.

Ummm,

Jodi Picoult - although I do try and wait for paperback, or bookmooch - absorbing and I get attached!

Bill Bryson - I have every book he's written except one old obscure dictionary that I am trying to hunt down. I Absolutely CAN'T wait for his books to come out in paperback, and buy them in hardback ASAP!

I also really like Patrick Gale, but wait for the paperbacks

I'm (impatiently) awaiting the latest George R R Martin book (release date put back to October Evil or Very Mad)

I did go through a Picoult phase, but overdid it a bit so am taking a long break Smile

Can't wait for the next Christopher Paolini.

That's about it really.

Bookmooch is a website where you can list all the books you have that you want to give away, and look for books you want. people ask you for your book, and you send it to them, and in return, you get points which you can swap for any book you want.

The only cost you incur is postage to mail out your books - but then the person sending you the book you want pays to do that, so I think it's a great thing!

umm... not to be too "female lit undergrad" but Margaret Attwood. The later books that are more like stories than politcal manifestos. Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, cos... well... they're awesome. And this may simply be a form of stockholm syndrome but I developed a certain affection for Elizabeth Gaskill last semester.

Pratchett.

I have all his books from Pyramids in first ed hardback...

I also have an original 1971 copy of The Carpet People and I'm not going to tell you how much it cost me...suffice it to say, my dh only let me buy it because it was written in my birth year!

Um. People I have to have when they release a book...hmmm...probably only Kim Harrison and I can usually wait until it comes out in paperback. There are very, very few authors I HAVE to have books by. I like so many books and so many kinds of books, that it's difficult to put my finger on any that blow me away.

Fellow bookmoocher here, though just recently it's been a bit quiet and my wish list hasn't been coming up. I think it's the recession; people just can't afford the postage.

I know! My wishlist is stuck! I REALLY want the books on it, but they seem to be totally unheard of!
You would think with the variety I have on there (including popular fiction, little bunny foo foo (as told and sung by the good fairy - LOL) and academic texts) that SOMETHING would come up - mind you DP has banned me from mailing out books abroad - although I notice he's happy to use his account to recieve books from everywhere!

Terry Pratchett (Good to see so many Pratchett fans! Do you think it means something?)

Donna Tartt (She wrote my favourite book in the universe but I've never read anything else she's written, for fear it will be rubbish and will tarnish my love of her other book. How ridiculous is that?)

Joanne Harris (Have yet to acquire more of her work, but she's one of those authors I would buy if I saw in a bookshop without thinking twice, and that is very rare for me)

I can't think of anyone else really. M and I are big fans of Peter Robinson, we have a fairly extensive Inspector Banks collection and I really enjoyed Caedmon's Song too, but he's not one of those people who's work I consider brilliant. He's just 'background' reading.

Henri, did you like The Secret History and worry about The Little Friend?

I did too, but ultimately liked TLF better - it's an even better book and even better written.

Go on, I dares ya!

YES.
I don't think it's possible for me to like anything in the world better than I like TSH. I wanted to do Classics at uni for years before I read the book, and I have always been 'into' Greek mythology and history to an insane level, so that book was written for me. And um, I may be named after Henry Winter. Because I identify with sociopaths, yo.

I may give TLF a go. I just have not heard good things about it until you just said that right now, so I was avoiding. I didn't want to read it and be like 'That is not as good as TSH, you fail at life, Miss Tartt.' and then not be able to love TSH as much because I felt she'd somehow failed me, you know?
I bet you don't know. Thats a totally crazy way of looking at it. I take it personally when an author I love for one book sucks for another. Deeply, deeply personally.

Is that the dictionary of Troublesome words?
