Getting rid of nettles

Post  Moomin76 on Sat May 09, 2009 12:42 pm

I've suddenly had several nettle plants springing up in my borders. I need to get rid of them so my dd can play outside safely. I'm planning to dig them up to get rid of the roots, but is there anything else I should/could be doing to discourage them from coming back again? We didn't have any last summer, so I've no idea why we've got them now Evil or Very Mad

I think you are supposed to pour boiling water on them to kill them.

The boiling water should work, I just regularily pull them out by the root.

I think the best thing to do is pull them out and if its in a flowerbed plant lots around them, this will crowd them out.

If you have loads and loads you could always strim them?

Em, If you grab them carefully at the bottom there is no sting and you can pull along the root and it will get a load out at once
good luck

I finally got round to doing the boiling water. Unfortunately I am now seriously traumatised as it turned out there was a toad hiding under one of them and I didn't know it was there until it started screaming. Awful. I feel so guilty! We don't have a pond and none of our neighbours do either - no idea why it was even in our garden.

OMG you, you ... you ... toad-burner! That's nasty, there was NO need for it. HMPH.

Heh!

Poor you ... Hugs for the trauma and mental anguish!

I plucked up the courage the next day to go and look for the body but it wasn't there. Am choosing to think it is ok and living happily somewhere rather than that it crawled away and died elsewhere!

Yes it really screamed. Well sort of a cross between a squeal and a scream. Dh heard it from inside the house Embarassed

Frogs scream too...my cats used to chase them before we got the dog...

It probably has found somewhere else to live...away from the toad boiler! Shocked
